Inclusivity in education has never been more important or more possible. Use this guide to aid you in developing your courses as well as yourself to achieve more welcoming and effective learning environments.
- Implicit Bias Training: Take implicit bias training yourself. Have your TAs take it as well.
- Anonymous Grading: If grading open-ended responses, i.e. essays, do anonymous grading. This is an option in Canvas.
- Use Student Names: Even learning some names communicates that you care for students as individuals. You don't even have to memorize names for this to be effective; using name cards in class improves student belonging.
- Teaching Teams: Form alliances and with other instructors that also aim for inclusive teaching. This is sometimes called a community of practice. Support colleagues and seek support when you need it. Sometimes that is generating new strategies. Sometimes that involves advice on navigating scenarios. Sometimes that involves discussing your failings. Teaching does not take place in a vacuum.
Pedagogy
