As the name suggests, Write a Question asks students to reflect on a topic and then write down at least one question they still have on the topic. Students can write the question on a piece of paper or through an assignment or survey on Canvas. In either situation, it is best for questions to be anonymous to ensure authentic questions. Write a Question allows all students an opportunity to ask a question without the negative emotions sometimes associated with asking questions out loud during a lecture.

By having students write down one or two questions, the instructor gains a better understanding of what content is still difficult and may need to be reviewed in a future lecture. When using this strategy, it is essential that the most common questions are answered either in the next lecture or using an electronic announcement or short video.
