Frustrated or overwhelmed by student AI use? Wondering how your department can incorporate AI thoughtfully and with appropriate safeguards? This hands-on learning community will provide structure to develop the assessment strategies and policies you need to better support students through this challenging time. Individuals or departmental teams will work with instructional designers from the CTT to complete projects addressing their specific needs at the intersection of AI and pedagogy. For example, individual instructors can use this as an opportunity to develop assignments, learning activities, or course policies related to AI (incorporating it into the class, discouraging / preventing its use, or anything in between). Groups of instructors or administrators could work on developing departmental policies, curriculum plans, or common assessments / classroom activities.
At the first meeting, all participants will set goals for the projects they’d like to complete over the course of the semester. Then, we will meet twice monthly throughout the semester to report on progress made, receive feedback from other participants on work in development, and engage in discussions of topics of importance such as teaching critical thinking with AI or integrating AI into the curriculum intentionally. At the end of the semester, participants interested in sharing their work will have the opportunity to add the resources they develop to the CTT website.
Some possible projects or challenges that participants may want to address include:
- Developing / re-designing assignments or classroom activities:
- Teaching critical AI literacy / AI ethics
- Assessing critical thinking when students are using AI
- Scaffolding assignments to discourage AI reliance
- Re-designing assessments where students over-rely on AI
- Developing an AI policy for individual course or departmental use
- Engaging in departmental curriculum planning:
- Identifying relevant AI competencies
- Determining where those skills can be incorporated into the curriculum
- Developing student-facing resources for courses or departments on responsible use of AI
