Using embedded tools like Accessibility Checker in Canvas and MS Office to revise course materials.
Why
This presentation focuses on making course materials more accessible and working towards Universal Design for a biology course. The LIFE 120 course materials include lots of images and informational text that we wanted to make more accessible for visually impaired students.
How
The School of Biological Sciences hired a graduate student, Daniel Gutzmann, to work on editing and checking all course materials in the LIFE 120 lab and lecture. The graduate student worked closely with a CTT instructional designer on how to make materials in Canvas more accessible for a lab-based course that relies heavily on complex images and visualizations.
