This workshop introduces instructors to learning analytics and the UNL Course Insights tool. Gaining familiarity with available learning analytics tools and exploring and addressing course-level equity gaps is the focus of this two-part workshop consisting of an asynchronous pre-workshop online module and a 60 minute in-person session.

In the pre-workshop module, participants will learn what learning analytics are, the types of questions being addressed with LA data, and examples of when and how LA can be used over a semester.

During the synchronous session, participants will explore data from a course they have taught at least once and discuss how they might use LA to inform questions they develop about student learning. By the end of the session, attendees will have outlined a small project they might do in response to what they’ve learned about their course.

The synchronous session will be offered in-person and concurrently online. In-person attendees should bring laptops to the session. Those attending online from OFF CAMPUS will need to make sure their computers are equipped with VPN access in order to access all LA dashboards.

Learning outcomes for Pre-Workshop Module:

  • Describe what learning analytics (LA) is Describe different types of LA data.
  • List types of questions LA can be used to investigate.
  • Identify at least two ways to design a Canvas course for good data collection.

Learning outcomes for Synchronous Workshop

  • Gain familiarity with Course Insights dashboards and what types of questions they can inform.
  • Identify ways to use LA dashboards to gain insight into the effectiveness of course design and teaching strategies.
  • List ways that LA can be used during the semester to encourage student engagement with content and to personalize feedback.
